Tuesday February 9 El Zoológico en Marina

Today we all met at the zoo in Marina - a small town outside of Ciudad Quesada where a few of us are staying.  As always, people were late.   We all got there about 1-:30.  It was a place very similar to Gray Animal Park and it was very nice.  The hi-lites for me were the things we don't have in maine like Toucans, alligators, monkeys and Tapins.   It was nice to get back together as a group.   Sarah got really badly burned at the beach and it really suffering.   Johanna was invited by María Jesus and Rafa's family to go to the beach and Lucas broke a chair.   He was sitting in a plastic chair and we heard a POP that sounded like gunfire.  We looked and Lucas was on the floor.  Nobody laughed.   (He was NOT hurt)
After the zoo Rafa`s dad took Johanna home.  He took us home too but first he stopped at the fruit store and bought TONS of fruit for the trip to the beach.   He invited us to his house and gave us fruit.  (I had ice cream with mine(sorry Linda, Sorry B)   It was SOOO good.   So enjoy the pics.

I have been wanting to mentioned a few cultural differences.  None of the windows have screens and doors and windows are open most of the time.  Oddly, bugs are not much of a problem.

Also, Luis reminded me that you NEVER put toilet paper in the toilet but always in the trash can.

The other one that is probably well known is the difference in pace.   We hurry and are stressed out and punctual - here not so much.  Yesterday Luis waited for me at school.  We were supposed to be back at 7.  It was 7:45 before we got there.   It is called the "Hora tica"   It is very different.

ok, all for now.  Tomorrow is our first day of school.

  1. Skip,
Linda Chaisson, good person that she is, passed on the link to your blog. So fabulous to read about your trip... the world is such a big and interesting place. And what a treat to be with Gabe down there. Funny - I have no recollection of the peace foundation connection... may have actually been through my father-in-law. Thinking of you,
    Angela
